ABOUT THE BULLDOGS

Burton averaged 9.3 points and 8.6 rebounds per game last season, while Ortiz averaged 8.3 points per game. The Bulldogs do have good size on the roster with eight guys 6-3 to 6-5. If McKinley’s newcomers can contribute immediately, expect the Bulldogs to be competitive in the Federal League.

Boardman no match for McKinley

By John Bassetti

BOARDMAN - The Boardman High student section made a spirited attempt to psyche out the visiting team from Canton with its reading-a-newspaper ploy during the pre-game introduction of McKinley players, but, in reality, it was bad news from the start as the Bulldogs buried the Spartans, 96-43, in Tuesday’s Federal League opener for both teams.

Starter Marcellius Pittman (6-foot-3) and sub Marquis Gaines (6-4) had 20 points apiece, while 6-5 Sam Burton added 19 for McKinley (2-1), which took control early.

“They’re big and athletic and they played hard,” said Boardman’s Marcus Smith. (For more click Boardman no match for McKinley headline in this box.)

CANTON  McKinley would have been hard-pressed to win a game like this last season. The Bulldogs were too inexperienced in a league full of talented teams and exceptional players.

Now the Bulldogs appear poised to be a part of that group, too.

McKinley rallied from a five-point third-quarter deficit Friday and held on to beat Jackson 82-77 in an entertaining Federal League game at Memorial Field House.

A year after winning just seven games, the Bulldogs sit at 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the league. Their only loss — 67-62 at Cleveland Heights — came on a night when they trailed by as many as 19.

“We gave Jackson two good games a year ago, but when things got tough, we weren’t able to respond,” McKinley head coach Keith Noftz said. “This team responds. (Click headline for the rest of the story.)

Lake remained the league’s only unbeaten team after a strong closing 10 minutes dispatched host McKinley 58-42 on Friday, in a game which the teams combined to shoot just 24 free throws.

The Blue Streaks (7-0, 4-0) would be wise not to look behind them.

Raiders rally past Bulldogs

By

Warren

Warren Harding basketball saw the crowning of new royalty after Saturday night’s 53-51 win over Canton McKinley.

Harding senior King Garner, a slender 6-foot-1 combo guard, made the game’s decisive play in the final moments with the game tied at 51. After a Harding turnover on what the Raiders intended to be the game’s final possession, Garner knocked an outlet pass away from McKinley forward Marcellius Pittman inside the Bulldogs’ 3-point arc and drove to the hoop.

“I just had to make a play so we could win,” Garner said, a smile revealing a mouthful of braces enclosed by an amateur’s goatee. “I just saw [Pittman’s] eyes up. He was looking to throw it deep. I was just trying to make him throw a bad pass and I felt the ball hit my hand then tried to go make the layup.”

JACKSON TWP.  Jackson High School boys basketball coach Tim Debevec said there was no yelling, no screaming and no super-intense motivational speeches from the Polar Bears’ coaching staff at halftime of Friday’s game against  McKinley.

Whatever was said behind those closed doors certainly worked to perfection over the final 16 minutes.

Jackson nearly dropped a 60-point second half on the visiting Bulldogs, instead settling for a 57-19 scoring edge over the final two quarters. That was more than enough offense to totally flip the script on a 37-29 McKinley halftime lead and allow  the Bears to coast to an 86-56 victory. (for more click on the link above)

CANTON  The season went sideways for the McKinley High School boys basketball team the first time it faced Hoover.

Would Friday night’s visit from the Vikings help McKinley reroute its GPS?

The Bulldogs sure hope it did. McKinley pulled away from Hoover in the fourth quarter for a 79-61 Federal League win in front of a sparse gathering at Memorial Field House.

McKinley started this season 3-1, which included a win against Jackson — now ranked No. 9 in the state in Division I. Then a Dec. 17 loss at Hoover sent the Pups into a 2-7 spiral entering Friday.

“That is where our season turned for the worse,” said McKinley 6-foot-3 senior wing Paul Ortiz, who scored a game-high 27 points Friday to help turn it for the better. (click on the headline to read the rest of the artical from The Repository)

LAKE TWP.  There are plenty of ways to describe Lake High School’s boys basketball team.

State-ranked.

Unbeaten.

Rolling.

All of those still apply after Lake made quick work of McKinley with a 65-49 win at Lake High School on Wednesday night.

You might even call the Blue Streaks crafty.

What most people miss is this: Tom McBride’s team is deceptively athletic, too.

“I’ll take that,” McBride said. “They’re a group of guys who understand basketball. I like how they play through mistakes. We’re able to capitalize on our mistakes instead of hanging our heads on the next possession. I sense a basketball IQ out of these guys.”

The win was Lake’s 15th in a row. The Blue Streaks are ranked fifth in the latest Division I Associated Press poll. (Click on the headline for the entire article)

CANTON  After going 1-2 in the last 10 days without breaking 51 points, McKinley head coach Keith Noftz was looking for his Bulldogs to step up and put the ball in the hole Tuesday night against visiting Green.

Noftz got his wish.

McKinley shot 53 percent from the floor, drilled nine 3-pointers and went 10-of-12 from the line in the fourth quarter to pin a 68-63 defeat on a Green team that hung around until the final seconds.

“Give McKinley credit,” Green coach Mark Kinsley said after his team dipped to 11-5. “They made shots. They make nine 3s, hit eight straight free throws in the fourth quarter, they are probably going to win.”

“If we get to 60, we’ve got a good shot,” agreed Noftz. (Click on the headline to read the remaining article)

CANTON  There is no secret about the many personalities of the
McKinley High School boys basketball team. Wednesday night’s 65-40 first-round sectional tournament victory against Barberton was a microcosm of the Bulldogs’ season.

There was the first quarter when
McKinley sleep-walked its way to a

9-8 deficit. The second quarter when Keith Noftz watched his team begin to wake from their slumber. Bad Bulldog started. Good Bulldog finished.

And then there was the second half.
McKinley looked like a team that could play with anybody as it pulled away from the Magics. The Pups outscored overmatched Barberton
42-21 in the third and fourth quarters.

AKRON  No one wants an early jump on their offseason.

A late start in defending and rebounding, though, helped send the McKinley High School boys basketball team into its offseason Saturday.

The Bulldogs dug an early hole behind poor defense and poorer rebounding, and Ellet took full advantage to beat its visitors 61-58 in a Division I sectional final.

A historic win for Ellet allows the fifth-seeded Orangemen to take a 20-3 record into the district semifinals Wednesday at Memorial Civic Center against top-seeded Jackson.

“I think (20 wins) is a school record,” said fourth-year Ellet head coach Mark Fisher. “It feels great to beat a storied program, Canton McKinley, for our 20th win and a school record.”
