History of the OHSAA Playoffs Format Changes…

Beginning format

1972-1979, The Ohio High School Athletic Association hosts its own football tournament to award state championships,The top team from each of the four regions (12 teams) qualifies in three classes, AAA, AA, and A to play in state semifinals.

Modification 1

1980-1984, OHSAA expanded the playoff format and separates schools into divisions so 40 teams can qualify,The top two teams from each of the four regions qualify in five divisions, I, II, III, IV, and V to play in region final.

Modification 2

1985-1993, OHSAA expanded the playoff format to include 80 teams, the top four teams from each of the four regions qualify in five divisions, I, II, III, IV, and V to play in region semifinal.

Modification 3

1994-1998, OHSAA expanded the playoff format to include 96 teams, the top four teams from each of the four regions qualify in six divisions, I, II, III, IV, V and VI to play in region semifinal.

Modification 4

1999-2012, OHSAA expanded the playoff format to include 192 teams, the top eight teams from each of the four regions qualify in six divisions, I, II, III, IV, V and VI to play in region quarterfinal.

Modification 5

2013-2015, OHSAA expanded the playoff format to include 224 teams, the top eight teams from each of the four regions qualify in six divisions, II, III, IV, V, VI and VII to play in region quarterfinal. Division I is seperated into two super regions, the top 16 teams in each qualifiy to play in round one game according to finish in computer poll (1 vs 16, 2 vs 15, 3 vs 14, 4 vs 13, 5 vs 12, 6 vs 11, 7 vs 10, 8 vs 9).

Modification 6

2016-present, OHSAA Board of Directors vote to return Division I to four regions. 224 teams will continue to qualify for the playoffs, the top eight teams from each of the four regions qualify in all seven divisions I, II, III, IV, V, VI and VII to play in region quarterfinal.

Modification 7

Competitive balance is introduced that adds to the male totals of some schools based on open enrollment or transfers and winning titles in lower divisions may move a school up or down based on the OHSAA determining factors. See OHSAA.org for more. All divisions and regions remain in place.
