so now that a new caucasian coach is hired at mckinley are you going to forget about the injustice that was done to coach johnson and his family?are you going to weather out another storm in a year or two?is it going to be business as usual?are you now going to finincially support the program once again?let us not forget what was done to coach johnson and turn our back on him.i hope he files his lawsuit soon and some justice will come out of this mess.

There's a difference between supporting the kids/team itself and supporting what happened in this process/the board of education/etc. I'll give the BOE/committee minor credit for making the 'right decision' in terms of the 5 finalists in the end, but that tidbit of credit is far overshadowed by the lack of respect I have for how some have represented themselves in this mess, how the whole process went down, and most importantly the fear of what is to come with the current set-up as far as which people are in both official and 'behind closed doors' positions of power. You can support RJ and continue the fight to hold elected officials accountable while still supporting the kids and the new coach in his attempt to bring the community together. Lord knows he'll need it after reading some responses today and tonight to articles posted on the decision. It's amazing how quickly it turned from arrogant "we got our guy, watch out now" type posts to the time-honored tradition of claiming racism after the end result. I'm of the belief that the efforts already undertaken by Dave, JR, the Keep RJ group, the new foundation, and RJ's legal team lead to a change in this decision for who was selected as coach. Efforts were not made in vain and I'm sure there's more to come to insure this doesn't happen again.

turning your back on coach johnson?

My memory is very clear about the last 3 months. What they did to Mr Johnson was not proper. These events will leave a scar on this program for quite some time. Those same scars will be on Mr Johnson and his family. This district is a microcosm of what is was 10 years ago. They are spending money on Mason Elementary and the schools in the SW end get nothing. Us SW'enders always get the backwash of the decisions. I think my monetary support dwindles with each botched decision they make. Mr Brahler needs to convince them that we count down here. Support is multifaceted. One will hesitate before they enroll their hard earned money into this program from here on out. Rightfully so. A basic decision won't heal the wounds bigdog I agree. My father would say "time will" For Mr Johnson and his family, that's all they have.

I'm not as familiar with the SW end schools as I don't live there, but I am not sure what you mean with the Mason statement. When other schools were being rebuilt into these educational palaces Mason was having full classes of kids being taught in trailers and still do. My son will start school there next year and while the scores and all the benchmarks at Mason seem to be among the best in the city I haven't seen anything being done to make the physical building improved.

The bottom line is our entire district is suffering financially. I think, from the little I know about all of the candidates, that they hired the guy with the most successful resume, but I am not sure that is why he was hired. Maybe he was hired in an effort to hurt or diminish Coach Johnson's lawsuit against the district. And given the financial shape CCS is in, this was a smart decision from that angle as well.

I am still sad about this whole situation from beginning to end and that sadness wasn't going away regardless of who would have been hired. We have an uphill climb as a district and right now our vehicle has square wheels. Good luck to Filtz and whatever staff he is able to put together. I believe they will need it.

No other end of town has taken hits like the SW. Baxter, closed. Souers, closed, etc...Other schools are full and in trailers too. Fairly spend the money between the buildings who have yet to receive any upgrades. Only seems like the educated thing to do.

Indeed .Mason is a great school, but is FAr behind some of the other buildings ( see Gibbs ,Worley ,etc...) That school has NOT been given an unfair amount for capital inprovement , in fact its the other way around ...Marty , your off base on this one

Not really. Would like to see our money spent evenly around the district and I'm sure City Councilman Fisher would agree. My point is that ALL buildings left behind without any improvements should be treated equally. Wouldn't you agree?

Your point is valid. Mason as your example is not. That's all I am saying.

With the financial trouble we are in as a district, I don't expect any major upgrades to any of these schools anytime soon. I would think it is much more likely the next 5 to 10 years involves enrollment falling, more teachers and faculty losing their jobs, levies not being passed, all sports becoming pay to play and more buildings being closed. That's the direction I see the district heading and no coach is responsible for this nor are they the solution to it. The number of wins on football may reflect these other problems, but I think our football results are the LEAST of our worries! That's my opinion anyway.

once mck and timken consolidate into one institution with different career schoold within , the athletics performance will no longer be an issue at any time --- imagine timken and mckinleys basketball teams being one team with the top 12 on it ??? imagine the football team with Timken and Mck !! that would also so ALOT for the morale of all students .... the time is coming folks ... just a matter of time --but it will end up being a financially excellent move once the dust clears

CantonRep.com
CANTON — KEY ACTION The board voted 5-0 to allow schools’ Business Manager Tad Ellsworth to seek bids for infrastructure upgrades at Mason Elementary.

DISCUSSION Mason teachers at the meeting cheered when Ellsworth announced they would have air conditioning and new plumbing by August. He said the pipes under the building are covered with asbestos, and new plumbing is essential to keeping the school open.

The school also will see a new parking lot, electrical system, and heating.

Board President Richard Milligan said it showed a long-term commitment to keeping the school open.

Every school not upgraded should have a plan such as this. That's my point. To my/our knowledge, there is none. If there is, please share with us as all of our kids need a stable enviroment conducive for learning. We all will agree to that.

Would be a major WIN for Canton. Money wise it makes a great deal of sense. Pray that the board does what is best for our children and explores such a great idea.

as this has become a side topic on this thread, all eyes can look to youngstown city schools as of last year or the year before housed their athletic teams in one building even if you are enrolled in the other building - they consolidated their sports programs but not their buildings - two campuses one sports program drawing from both enrollments. They did this to save money - as a test market for the above idea - I am sure research with their district could show if consolidating the sports programs would be fiscally a good idea. Actual data to prove one way or the other. with continual budget cuts from the state I could see this option being explored and researched in the near future. Not saying i want or dont want it to happen.
