McKinley vs. Twinsburg...regional final

Postby just a fan » Wed Mar 09, 2011 11:01 pm

The McKinley GIRLS basketball season is not over. This Friday evening, weather permitting, they will play #2 ranked Twinsburg for a chance to advance to the final four in Columbus. Sadly, WHBC doesn't have the game listed on their sports broadcast schedule. IMO, that's pathetic! So, I sent an email to them.....please consider doing the same.

Here's the email, which was sent to pcook@whbc.com and lgawthrop@nextmediagroup.net....

"I just looked at your sports broadcast schedule for the rest of the week. Please explain to me how it is that WHBC is covering the two boys D1 District semi-final games but not the girls D1 Regional final game between the #1 and #2 teams in the state. All around the state, people have been talking for weeks about the matchup between #1 McKinley and #2 Twinsburg and McKinley's own home town radio station isn't going to provide a broadcast of the game that's being played in their own back yard? Why?

Well Sam Bourquin might want to talk to Pam Cook. Here's the response that I got....

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: Pam Cook <PCook@whbc.com>
To: Renee; lgawthrop@nextmediagroup.net
Sent: Thu, March 10, 2011 5:43:23 AM
Subject: RE: [SPAM] [Score/Req: 10.1] you can cover semi-final district games but not a regional final game between #1 and #2 in the state?

Hi Renee:
Thank you so much for voicing your concerns. I really appreciate the input. The reason we are broadcasting the boys district games is because we are a radio station for all of Stark County and we have to go with a game that has a broader appeal. I know that is hard to understand and may not seem fair and I am sorry about that, but unfortunately that is the reality.
Again, thanks so much for writing.

My response to her.....

That would make sense if WHBC were covering a game on Friday evening, but according to your online schedule, you aren't. I'm not asking why a boys game over a girls game on the same night. That I would understand. But, there is no game being covered on Friday night....the night that the #1 team in Ohio high school girls basketball plays the #2 team in Ohio for the Regional Championship.

By the way, If WHBC is a station for ALL of Stark County, then it would make sense that you cover both boys and girls games. After all, approximately half of Stark County consists of women!

--Renee

When I sent my original email, I was basically doing so on behalf of the folks who won't be able to attend the game in person due to work, age, illness, being out of town, etc. because my plan was to be in attendance. I found out this morning that the meeting that I had scheduled in Canton for tomorrow has been cancelled, and instead, I'm stuck in a meeting here in Cincinnati and won't be able to attend the game. I'm really bummed....can't see the team play and can't listen to it online. :(

Sam said it on his show that it was all about sponsors. This isn't our parents WHBC any more. It's a business and they need to be able to make money from the broadcast. The days of doing games for the "community good" are long gone. Sad, but true.

in all seriousness-- its a fact --- a frustarting fact --- but indeed a fact that radio staions are not going to put something on the radio that they will lose money on doing so... i mean when the WNBA team was in Cleveland , I do not remember then being on the radio on any of the Cleveland stations ... And jaf, if Canton, is in fact 50% female, that has no correlation to why this game would be on ... you should have just stuck with yopur first email because I guarantee you they were laughing at your response when you included that point about the femaile population in Stark County ...that broader appeal Pam referred to was the population in Jackson, N Canton, Plain etc...that will listen to the radio for the boys games , but most of them ( male or female ) would not tune into a girls game whether its Mck or any other Stark team... look Mck will be on soon enough when they eliminate Twisburg and go down to C-Bus ... I am lookig forward to watching them on STO when they bring home back to back titles ....

Here's lies the current problem with Canton McKinley (not pointing a finger at you SChile, making a point), there is too many of us away from the program and when the numbers are down at the sporting events and when broadcasters see little attendance, as do athletic directors because of lost revenue, they are fighting a losing battle when people stay home and don't go to the games.
Of course not everyone is in Canton and can go...but the reality is many of us are in the same boat as SChile, we will ride it out and wait for STO.
Lost population, economy, job growth (lol) and Bulldog interest is at an all-time low for the city of Canton, and with money tight, school budgets shrinking...we may be looking at the shell of a once proud city/school and tradition that is WCAMASIT.
If you can get to the games, go...if you can write an email to WHBC write, if you have an interest in Canton McKinley, better now to support it, because when the future comes with the way this is all playing out in Northeast Ohio, it could be gone in a blink of an eye...and what do we do about it...wait for it on STO?
We've got a lot work to do if you ask me.

With competition at an all time high for entertainment dollars, I don't think people in general and fans in particular are going to spend their hard earned dollars to watch the mighty Bulldogs wallow in mediocrity.

The boys basketball program is in shambles and has been since Malone took over.

Going to Columbus or watching on TV has no connection to jaf's frustration as to why the girls game is not going to be on WHBC .... if Mck is in the finals it will not only be on radio( on variuos channels) , but live on TV ...and I , obviuosly, will not be making the trip to Columbus ...I guess my question is when has Mck girls basketball or most HS girls teams in our area and outside areas EVER had support the remotely approaches the support boys teams get through attendance at games and radio play etc...??? :?:

maybe there needs to be some research done to see if there has ever been any precedence to this ....example , back when N Canton Girls team won the statechampionship a few yrs ago maybe someone can archive to see if their Regional Championship game was live on WHBC that night ??? Look SLoanchile would like to see it on the radio , but its just not in the cards for the reasons that have been already mentioned

The topic of this thread is the McKinley vs. Twinsburg GIRLS Regional Final game. Specifically, the lack of game coverage by WHBC. The state of the boys program isn't relevant to the discussion! Besides, the "mediocre" boys team was on the radio several times this year. The #1 in the state girls program hasn't been. The "mediocre" boys team isn't playing the #2 team in the state in the regional final. The #1 in the state girls program is.

If WHBC can cover the "mediocre" boys team in a district semi-final game, then they can cover the exceptional girls team in the regional final. Rather than being reactive and bitching and moaning after the fact (i.e. the game), why not be proactive and try to get the game on the radio?

Sloan, WHBC covered the North Canton Hoover girls team at least twice. Once was a title game.....they didn't cover the McKinley girls title game last year. I won't swear to it, but I believe the other time was a regional game.

I did get a third email from WHBC's Pam Cook asking "if we covered the game Friday night but did not follow up with their next game, would that upset you? I’m just curious." My response to her was that I would not be upset because the next game, should it occur, would be two hours away; and, it would be a semi-final game not a title game. This game involves #1 McKinley (local team) against #2 and it's in WHBC's back yard. Regardless of whether they cover the game, I appreciate her taking the time to respond to my emails.

All of that said, I suspect the weather is going to cause the game to be delayed.

thx jaf- im pretty sure ESPN 990 radio ( Massillon) has had the live coverage on the radio for all the boys and girls state championship finals but ,again, I do not remember ever hearing or hearing about any girls tournament game covered on the radio prior to the state final...

Let's see: 1) I live Cincinnati, which is 4 hours away, 2) I don't get off work until 5:00 and the game starts at 7:30....do the math, I don't have enough time to get to the game before it would end, 3) I have no vacation time because I used it all in recent months making multiple trips to Canton to help take care of my mom who passed away last month and since then handling the estate with the attorney, and 4) I planned ahead and scheduled a meeting for today in Canton so that I'd be able to attend the game and the meeting got canceled due to the weather.

Let me guess, neither 1, 2, 3 or 4 apply to you!

That was then this is now. WHBC wasl locally owned then and now is owned by a multi-station
holding corporation. For the game to be broadcast ad money wopuld have to be garnered from
the area sponsors, which have already committed to other coverage.

Sorry Just a fan.
Meant for local people.
WHBC would broadcast Hoover or Jackson girls if they had great teams.
WHBC just likes to put it to McK.
They just tell us a bunch of BS of reasons why.
The 3-7 guy might want to brodcast boys baseball games some Saturday this year. HMMM!
Hope you can go to C-Town next week if we take care of business tonight.

That would be twice as many people as the GlenOak vs. Timken game had and about 400 more than the McKinley vs. Jackson game had. And, where is WHBC? Absolutely moronic!!!!!

LOL, no, I"m not going to let this go.

Twinsburg is very good.

Their #21 is tough. She's the point and penetrates well and plays good defense.

It seems every time we penetrate its a charge.
