said the man in charge of the Canton City School District, Superintendent Fred Blosser.
If school officials want to post an accurate job description, they may borrow this one:
HELP WANTED:
Community rag doll needed. Will carry the title of head football coach. Hourly wage slightly above minimum. Candidates should be willing to be scrutinized from the minute they accept. Unmarried candidates will be highly considered; this is not a good job for the family man. Winning ONE state title is not good enough for a small community faction. They expect it every year, and they are not satisfied with that. Bullet-proof vest optional, but we guarantee several hatchets will be stuck in your back.
That is the truth, and that embarrasses the man who has to convince someone to take this job.
"I can't imagine who would want this position under these conditions," Blosser said. "It's an embarrassment to the community, and to put the program at risk because of the intense public scrutiny -- -- is grossly unfair, unwarranted and runs counterproductive to everything that is good about our social order.
"It sickens me that people would treat another human being in this manner and have no regard for the individual or his family. I'm embarrassed. ... That he has been subjected to this unfair criticism from a small group of misguided fanatics is unconscionable."
This has nothing to do with the players, and they must understand that. These are good kids who want nothing more than to give fans and the community a sense of pride this fall.
But these are the same players who watched their head coach, a strong man with a firm handshake, get beaten down by a certain faction of the community.
This faction calls themselves fans.
They are a cancer.
"If there is any indictment to be leveled, it should be leveled against those few who have been so vocal and so unfair," Blosser said. "I am absolutely worried that this program is in disarray. You can't take leadership at this stage of the game, create a void That's going to be difficult to fill under these conditions and expect to go on without missing a beat. I expect a rocky road for the program."
Today might be among the lowest days ever for the McKinley football program. Because human decency seems to have left.
Who in his right mind would want that job? And how much luster has the program lost?
