CANTON

At 5 p.m. on Thursday, two hours before tipoff, McKinley High boys basketball coach Rick Hairston gathered his team together to watch a scary movie.

Call it “I know what you did last Hoover game.”

“The way the film is set up, you can cut it on every mistake that you made,” said Hairston, whose team dropped an overtime game in North Canton on Jan. 22. “So we sat there for an hour and the kids didn’t say one thing. It was just, ‘Look, see this right here? That’s a mistake by us. And that right there is a mistake by us.’

“At the end of the day, the reason we lost to them was because we made too many mistakes and we didn’t play hard enough.”

That wasn’t a problem on Thursday. After a shaky first quarter, McKinley kicked into a gear that the Vikings just didn’t have and the Bulldogs forced 30 turnovers to pull away for a 76-55 victory in a Division I district semifinal at the Civic Center.

Atop the ladder, with scissors in hand, LePear Toles started to cut the few remaining strands of net that still hung on the Memorial Civic Center rim.

When someone objected, he replied, “They told me to take the whole thing.”

'Fat boy' comes up big for Pups

AKRON Twenty minutes after playing his best game of the tournament (so far), the teenager with the Rob Gronkowski frame and the Mike Tyson voice walked out of the McKinley High locker room holding two pieces of pizza.

Just then, Bulldog senior LePear Toles, spotted him and yelled "FAT BOY! Fat boy got his pizza!"

Funny stuff. But if there's one thing McKinley learned on Thursday night, it's this: good things happen when you feed Jordan Davis.

"Lights out" LePear Toles leads McKinley to regional win over Brunswick

By Chris Beaven

AKRON Stepping into a big, bright basketball arena brings out something special in LePear Toles.

The McKinley High School senior loves the bigger stage and the brighter lights, making him “play lights out.”

Toles continued his stretch of lights out tournament basketball Thursday night at Rhodes Arena on the University of Akron campus. The smooth, 6-foot-5 lefty did a bit of everything in leading the Bulldogs to a 72-65 win over Brunswick in a Division I regional semifinal. McKinley (22-5) returns to Rhodes Arena on Saturday night at 7 for the regional finals. The Bulldogs will play unbeaten Lima Senior, which is led by Xavier Simpson, one of the state’s top players and an AAU teammate of Toles’.

Expect Toles to be excited to step back onto the floor of one of the colleges recruiting him. He loved playing last week at Canton Memorial Civic Center, the home of the D-League’s Canton Charge.

“It feels so good playing on courts like this and the Civic Center,” Toles said. “I think I am fired up on any court. College courts or NBA courts make me play lights out.”

AKRON He led them from the beginning. He led them at the end.

He was the one at the front of McKinley’s handshake line after the final game of his brilliant high school career, waiting patiently for Lima Senior to finish its celebration so he could congratulate them. He was the one who spoke in McKinley’s final huddle. He was the one who broke that final huddle. AKRON Saying goodbye to this team was never going to be easy for Rick Hairston. He hoped for one more week with them.

Instead, the end arrived Saturday for the McKinley High School boys basketball team in its first season since the school merged with Timken.

In an emotional, fast-paced Division I regional final, unbeaten Lima Senior held off McKinley 68-61 at Rhodes Arena. The Bulldogs, down 16 entering the final quarter, rallied within two midway through the fourth quarter but could not come all the way back.

The win sent Lima (28-0) to the state tournament. McKinley, hoping to get to the final four for the first time since winning two straight titles in 2005 and 2006, ends its season at 22-6.
